The Center facilitated a Peer Learning Session for the Luzon (and Visayas) Cluster of Fellows last June 5, 2008 at the Asian Institute of Management, as part of its learning support for the Fellows of the Center’s Bridging Leadership Fellows Program. The event was attended by Director Lorna Dino of the NEAP, LtC Francis Alaurin of the Philippine Army, Col. Boing Ecarma of the Philippine Marines, Mayor Tante Gerdan of Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya, and Director Ted Romo of DSWD-7. The event was facilitated by the Center’s Executive and Associate Directors, Prof. Ernie Garilao and Mr. Mike Juan. Prof. Titong Gavino also joined some of the discussions in the second half of the session.

Last May 20 to 21, the AIM Team Energy Center conducted a Bridging Leadership Workshop for Lt. Col. Charlie Galvez, Jr.’s Core Group in his work in promoting peace and development in Southern Tagalog. The Workshop, held at the Asian Institute of Management, was attended by individuals from the 2nd Infantry Division (2ID), Region IV’s Philippine National Police, Department of Social Welfare Development, and Peace and Order Office, and was led by Prof. Jacinto Gavino, DBA and Mr. Michael Juan. BGen. Roland Detabali, Commander of the 2ID, attended the closing ceremony of the event.

Congratulations to BL Fellow, Mr. Vlad Hernandez of the Community and Family Services International (CFSI). Their three proposals reached the final round of the Panibagong Paraan Grant Competition (which is indeed a rare feat), and out of the three proposals, one won project funding and another won special citations and awards. Dear Jay,

Regarding the 3 CFSI Proposals who made it to the Semi-Final Round of Panibagong Paraan, all three made it to the Final Round and were given the chance to participate in the exhibit in Mega Mall. One proposal won project funding, another won a special citation/award, scholarships for the Teduray youth beneficiaries and two round trip tickets to Palawan. One did not make it though. But overall, making it to the Finals is an achievement in itself. More than 500 proposals were submitted and only 98 made it to the Finals. Of the 98, three came from CFSI–the only organization with more than one entry making it to the Finals. All three CFSI proposals were influenced/inspired by the BL Framework.

For those interested to know the latest development in Mt. Kitanglad, particularly on the Bukidnon tribe in which my ngo in KIN is currently assisting, we have four uploaded videos at www.youtube.com. Just search for “findheartworks” and look for these titles:

RE: Post-2nd Workshop Reminders

Greetings of Peace!

Thank you very much for your attendance and active participation in the 2nd Leadership Workshop of the AIM TeaM Energy Center’s Bridging Leadership Fellows Program. I am very pleased with what transpired in the event and I hope it was as great a learning experience for you as it has been for me and the rest of the Center’s staff.

The four-day 2nd Workshop was designed mainly to discuss the theory behind, as well as the skills and tools necessary for the third and most challenging phase of the Bridging Leadership Framework: the Co-Creation of new realities. Be sure to complement what you have heard in the various lectures and presentations about Participatory Governance, Partnerships, and Resource Mobilization, among others, with the readings that we have provided you in the workshop kit.

In the coming months, please address the following:

1. Finalized Shared VMOKRAPI. By this time, you are expected to have accomplished your Personal VMOKRAPI, and that you have convened and initiated dialogues with your stakeholders about this. Hopefully, your stakeholders have validated your objectives, key-result areas, and performance indicators, and now own the societal issue that you want to address and share your leadership vision and mission

2. SPATRES. After the 2nd Workshop, you should now make a collaborative action plan, or the SPATRES, with your stakeholders. The SPATRES will answer the questions, What is our STRATEGY in reaching our objective? What will be our PROGRAMS, and what ACTIVITIES and TASKS will these programs entail? What kind and how much RESOURCE will we need? Refer to your Session 8 Structured Learning Exercise (SLE), entitled, “My Co-Creation Plan”; and

3. Resource Mobilization Plan. Resources will be crucial for the Co-Creation phase and it is important that you have a plan for raising not only funds but also perhaps man-power, technical expertise, etc. Refer to your Session 9 SLE on “Resource Mobilization Plan”. Please pass these to the Center so your Mentors and I can advise and help you make your plans for Co-Creation more feasible and attainable.

The 3rd Leadership Workshop is tentatively set on September 8-12, 2008 (please reserve these dates already). We are planning to have a session here where you will present what will then be your one-year old Bridging Leadership Journey to the public (including students from the AIM, Faculty, and other invited guests). They will be interested to hear your leadership experience: What is different about your leadership? What are the innovative programs you implemented? How have you created new institutional arrangements? What impact did these new arrangements make? What are your successes and difficulties in your journey? I strongly suggest that you continue recording your various leadership efforts and the learning insights that you get from these in the coming months.

Until then, do not hesitate to contact me, Mike Juan, your Mentors, and the rest of the AIM TeaM Energy Center staff for any concern that you may have. It will be our pleasure to assist you, Bridging Leaders. Good luck.
